WAT bought an absurdly powerful magnet, with the intention of recovering metal objects from the riverbed. The problem was: how to suspend it without putting too much distance between the magnet and the junk?

This is my first answer.

It’s a Supplex pouch with double-stitched, melted and reinforced seams and hand-milled aluminum nonmagnetic hardware. The pull-cord is just an extra safety to prevent the magnet from falling out in unusual circumstances.

I’m mostly satisfied with the design, but some of the stitching across the webbing was imperfect. I suspect this was primarily due to the tension induced by using upholstery-grade thread, which is very heavy and causes weird tension problems where it shouldn’t, like the eye of the needle.

I made it with my mom’s Bernina 1130. I learned to sew on this very same machine, twenty years ago. It’s a testament to the quality of the tool that it still sells for almost a grand on eBay. I love Swiss machines and I hope to own this one someday.

The Marantz PMD620 has a remarkable interface design feature — the “level” LED indicators at the top of the unit. With two LEDs and three states, they convey all the necessary information about recording levels, leaving the OLED screen free for other purposes and obviating the need for bouncing level meters or excessive attention to the display. Note that the same effect could not have been achieved with a single multi-color LED, as in bright, outdoor conditions, it would be difficult to discriminate the color.

Some pictures and explanation:

In the first state, the LEDs are unlit. This indicates that the signal level is less than ideal.

In the second state, the first LED indicator is lit. This indicates that the signal is at or above an acceptable level. (Thankfully, this level can be pre-set by the user).

In the third state, the red LED lights up to indicate that the signal is clipping.

This isn’t everything, by any means. These are the things I’ve finished, or that didn’t need finishing. Much remains ongoing.

I am satisfied with what I’ve done, but it’s crystal clear to me that I’m tool-making. By that, I mean developing the means to do things. This is a good list, but it’s a list of potential, of gearing up for more and better bigger plans than tooling. I haven’t wasted any time, and I’m not yet dead. The next step is to shift my focus from the instruments to the task at hand. 2008 will be the year of wrestling hard problems.

Be patient with me as I may not be very talkative.
